ASTM A182 F22 covers forged and rolled alloy steel flanges built around a 2.25% chromium and 1% molybdenum composition. This Chromium-Molybdenum Steel base gives the material a different failure mode than plain carbon steel: it resists hydrogen attack and graphitization at temperatures where carbon steel softens. Mechanical strength holds steady up to 600°C, with tensile values reaching 515 MPa in the normalized and tempered condition. As the strength increases so does the pressure resistance with Class 150 up to Class 2500 ratings available depending on size and schedule. F22 is used for superheater piping, hydrocracking units, and high-pressure steam service at high temperature, and provides better creep life and oxidation resistance than lower-alloy grades.
