An RTJ flange carries a machined groove on its face instead of a flat sealing surface. A solid metal ring, usually oval or octagonal in cross-section sits in that groove and deforms slightly under bolt load, biting into both flange faces to form the seal. Because the ring carries the sealing load, not the bolts, the joint stays tight through thermal cycling that would loosen a soft-gasket connection.
RTJ flanges connect wellhead and Christmas tree assemblies on upstream oil and gas sites, high-pressure steam headers, subsea piping runs, and refinery units handling sour, H₂S-bearing service. Anywhere a single gasket failure means a shutdown, RTJ construction is the default spec.
