What are Blind Flanges?

Blind Flanges

A blind flange is a round plate with all necessary blowholes aside from the center hole. Due to this characteristic, Blind Flanges are typically used to seal off the extremities of pipe systems and pressure vessel openings. A line or vessel inside can also be easily accessed after it has been shut and needs to be reopened.

Maintenance and repairs on a pipeline would be challenging without the blind flange. At the closest valve, which might be miles away from the repair site, the flow would need to be stopped. Additionally pricey and prone to sticking, valves are a major expense. A pipe can be sealed with a blind flange much more affordably. In the petrochemical, pipe engineering, public services, and water treatment industries, among others, blind flanges are frequently utilized.

A blind flange (BF) is a piping component used to cover or seal the end of a pipe, valve, vessel, or tank. It offers simple open access for further extension of the pipe when utilized at the end of a pipe, vessel, or tank. The blind flange is under greater stress than any other flange because its main function is to limit the pipe’s pressure.

In any industry that uses pipes, blind flanges—abbreviated BV—are frequently employed. They come in every face type (RTJ, Raised, and Flat Face) and pressure range. Although it isn’t a good idea in most pipework, a blind can be put between two flanges to impede flow. The designer should utilize a spectacle blind when attempting to temporarily obstruct flow in a pipe. A blind flange is placed at the end of a valve to prevent process fluid from escaping in the event that the valve is accidentally opened.

Applications of Blind Flange

A blind flange can be utilized when constructing a piping system for expansion to enable bolting on piping after the expansion is finished. By simply adding to the end flange, this design enables pipeline extension or continuation. The operations and maintenance team can use a blind flange to clean out or check the piping during a shutdown if it is employed on a manifold in a filthy service.

Consider the removal process before installing a blind flange on a vessel manway. After the bolts are removed, it might be necessary to add a lifting eye for a crane or a davit that is specifically made to keep the flange in place. Care should be taken to ensure that the davit can support the whole weight of the flange.

A blind flange is a solid disk used to close off or halt a pipeline. The mounting holes are machined into the mating surface, and the gasket sealing rings are machined into the perimeter, just like a conventional flange. A blind flange is different since it doesn’t have an aperture for fluid to travel through. To stop the flow of liquid through a pipeline, the blind flange can be installed between two open flanges.

When a repair is necessary farther up the line, a blind flange is frequently placed into the pipeline. As a result, it is safe to detach the flanges further downstream. This kind of obstruction is frequently employed when a new valve or line is connected to an old pipeline. When a line is no longer required, it can likewise be shut down using this blockage. It would be challenging to maintain or repair a pipeline without the blind flange. The closest valve would need to be closed, which could be miles away from the repair site. A pipe can be sealed much more affordably using a blind flange.
